TRADE UNIONS: Securing Jobs for All.

TRADE UNIONS: Securing Jobs for All.

The trade union’s primary role is to protect the rights of workers from employer abuse and the violation of their rights. Each sector will be allowed to choose their union of choice. Currently, unions operate ineffectively due to a lack of governmental support for businesses and workers. Our government has yet to sign the most covenant of the ILO and subscribe to the free market prescription, wherein labor rights are ignored.

JPM’s mission is to ensure:

  • Our program establishes one united umbrella union that encompasses all unions.
  • Our union subscribes to the International Labor Union(ILO) rules and regulations.
  • All unions have a governing board that will be voted in by their respective members.
  • All workers are allowed the regular 8-hour workday with overtime pay of time and a half.
  • All workers have the benefit of health care, maternity leave, and a probationary period of three months.
  • All workers must be provided with an employee handbook with all the rights thereof imprinted.
  • All workers are due to a warning of three infractions before being fired.
  • All the above must be the standard abide by for all businesses.

Also:

  • Our workers must be seen as an integral part of the process of our development and the drivers of value. Trade unions will have the right to conduct its activities unfettered, disclosure of accounts by management, wage-related information, information regarding a company’s policies, job safety, and expenditure of social and recreational benefits.
  • Industrial relations must be such that workers are secure and confident in their jobs. Job security will be strengthened by preventing arbitrary layoffs, discrimination, elimination of contract work without health benefits, and social security. There must be provision for promotion, pay increases, and improved working conditions. Senior workers must be included on the board of directors in companies.
  • All workers must be entitled to a forty-hour workweek with time and half compensation if they work more than forty hours.
  • There must be a mandatory 2-week vacation yearly after one year of employment.
  • All workers must have a Workers Manual detailing his or her job description and the rights to the benefits they are entitled to.
  • All workers must be given a ninety-day probationary period. Three infractions must be committed before any worker is terminated.
  • All efforts will be made to have all trade unions operate under a unified umbrella organization to facilitate their efficiency and contribution to national development.
  • JPM will strive to ensure that Jamaica’s labor laws conform to international labor laws. JPM will also attempt to utilize training and educational materials provided by the International Labor Organization (ILO).
