The Garrison Debate

The new prime minister of Jamaica, the planned appointment by the disgraced Bruce Golding launched his election campaign with the “walk through the garrison” motto with his parliamentary leader of opposition Mrs. Portia Simpson. This approach seems similar to the demagogic pronouncement of the former Prime Minister of amending the constitution and to economically improve the lives of the poor in Jamaica,we are know the result of that lie. We totally agree with the opposition leader of not taking up this ridiculous approach in solving the garrison issue.

The garrison is a result of a political/economic policy carried out by both parties since the political independence of our country. The garrisons are used periodically to satisfy the political ambitions of both parties and a reservoir of cheap labor for the economic benefits of the private sector. The prime minister is following to the letter the script laid out by the International monetary fund wherein the sole purpose of our government is to collect taxes and maintain a tight security in the event of a social explosion. Golding went to Washington DC with the new Prime Minister to have him sign on to the imperial demand of him staying the Golding Course.

Both the prime minister and the opposition should assert some aspect of National leadership not a tribal one. Mrs. Simpson should reveal to the public before the national election her strategy of dealing with the debt issue that is suffocating our people and the prime minister focus should be on eradicating poverty. Both leaders are out of touch with the reality of the garrisons. The garrisons are where the best sons and daughters came from. The garrisons need jobs, health centers, training job centers and positive reinforcement, not for both leaders to walk through them for a photo op.
