Among the concert of global calamities -mostly caused directly or indirectly by human beings-, the United Nations Organization recently pointed out, through its Secretary-General, what it considers the five greatest emergencies:

01. The COVID-19 pandemic

He warned about the possibility that the variant of the coronavirus that follows Ómicron could be worse, reiterated the urgency of stopping contagion, without this implying undermining human rights, and denounced the inequality in access to immunization, due to the hoarding of the rich countries.

02. Financial system

There is an urgent need to reform a "morally corrupt" global financial system that favors the rich and punishes the poor, which triggers inflation, energy prices, and interest rates. Inequity between industrialized and developing countries is a recipe for instability, crisis, and migration.

03. Climate crisis

The devastating blows of the climate, which in 2020 alone forced 30 million people to flee their homes – a number three times greater than wars and violence – and the rise of global warming, force us to drastically transform our destructive relationship with the environment.

04. Cyberspace

Technology should not use people, but vice versa. There are too many risks that people run when accessing cyberspace, such as data misuse, incorrect information, and cybercrimes, which multiply rapidly.

05. Violent conflicts

Humanity is experiencing the highest number of violent conflicts since the formation of the UN in 1945. «Nuclear weapons now exceed 13,000, the highest level in decades. Human rights and the rule of law are under attack. Populism, nativism, white supremacy and other forms of racism and extremism are poisoning social cohesion and institutions everywhere."
